These three tiny islands can be found southwest of Cuba (en route to Honduras) and just 180 miles northwest of Jamaica. And though tiny in size, they have become a mighty force in the world of international banking; with tax haven laws introduced in 1966, there are now more than 500 banks on Grand Cayman, an island with a total population of 28,000. This main island, the largest and most developed, is actually about 85 miles southwest of Little Cayman and Cayman Brac, both only 10 miles square. (And though "caymanas" is a Spanish/Carib word for crocodiles, the name likely refers to the indigenous - and harmless - iguanas.)
There are some beautiful beaches in the Caymans - notably the justifiably famous Seven Mile Beach - but it is the underwater activity that attracts divers from around the world to explore the gardens of colorful coral, variety of marine life, shipwrecks too, in Caribbean waters known for having some of the most ideal diving conditions in the world.
